From the sierra club e-letter from British Columbia.
Green Weapons
Biodegradable explosives. Lead-free bullets. Armoured vehicles with hybrid engines.
No, it?s not a joke. Bae Systems, the world?s fourth largest arms manufacturer, is developing a new generation of ?green? weapons.
Bae?s environmental-friendly weaponry wish list reads like something out of a Michael Crichton novel. Weapons under development include missiles made from biodegradable plastics, warheads that create less noise pollution, and rockets that can be fired in ?sensitive marine environments? with reduced impact on sea life.
Read more about Bae?s green munitions plan.
The company, which has been criticized for selling weapons to repressive regimes and areas of conflict, also prides itself on steps it has taken to reduce its energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and use of volatile organic compounds.
Bae points out that dangerous compounds used to manufacture jets, fighting vehicles and artillery can ?harm the environment and pose a risk to people.?
We?re speechless?
