In the summer of 1986, Senator Hawkins rose to the floor of the US Congress to attack the Washington Post for giving "bad press" to "the tough but successful drug treatment program operated by Straight, Inc." See Smoke and Mirrors" by Dan Baum, p. 132.

: : : If you run accross the name Paula Hawkins in association with any of these characters, I'm interested in that.

: : US Senator Paula Hawkins once branded the Washington Post as a traitor to the War on Drugs for its unfavorable reporting on Straight, Inc. She lost her Senate seat to former Florida Governor Bob Grahm. But that was no big loss for Straight. Dr. Virgil Miller Newton has stated in sworn court deposition tthat he is a personal friend of Bob Grahm, and further, that his former business partner was ex-Governor Grahm's Chief of Staff.

: Do you have a time frame for that remark? Hawkins was very instrumental in gaining publicity for my father's legal battle with the USPS. I was in the program at that time. I remember that he was pretty damned ticked off that Straight had refused to support his effort. Now I'm curious to know what motivated Hawkins to throw her weight into this.
