: Welcome to Side Talk.

: Once upon a time, long ago but never far enough away, there was a place called Straigt Incorporated. Well, actually several places called Straight. At one point in the mid 80's, they were springing up like toad-stools all accross the country. Then some former clients and their families sued them as a corporation, brought criminal charges against individuals within the organization and, occasionally, sucessfully prosecuted them. This had the effect of the Magician's Apprentice breaking his spell-bound broom. They started springing up everywhere under various names and guises. Lately, I hear they've quit calling them rehabs in favor of the looser term "schools" (it's much harder to nail a school down to legal and ethical standards than a rehab). Here in Florida, they now call themselves the Drug Free America Foundation and Save Our Society.

:
: What I didn't know way back when was that the hundreds of millions of dollars a year that these people coerced out of the thousands of parents who had entrusted their children to them for help has been used primarily to influence public policy, win political elections and, in all likelyhood, to supply G. Dubya's alleged coke habit. (the irony is just devastating, huh?)

:
: More recently, you may have heard some talk about Brother Jeb's "new and improved" drug war strategy (now with forced treatment!). Light at the end of the tunnel? Or oncoming train? Having endured considerable emotional abuse in the "care" of one of the Bush Familie's pet programs, I find this new plan more than a bit disturbing!

:
: So I've set up this web BBS in order to promote dialogue and information sharing on this subject. They can only keep control if they can prevent all of us from comparing notes.

: I hope you find this to be a useful service. If you are currently involved in one of these coercive programs and the fact that people are beginning to break their vows of silence to compare notes about coercive rehab makes you uncomfortable or frightened, all I can say is GOOD! If you're casting about in your mind wondering which of your rights are being violated by such discussion, well you have the right to face your accusors. So be careful what you wish for.

: Sucks, being afraid, doesn't it? Hahaha!

: If you haven't read the FAQ yet, please do so before proceeding.

: Thanks and enjoy your stay.
: Ginger
