To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Mark Schone and I'm a senior writer at SPIN magazine. I often write about juvenile justice issues for SPIN, which is a New York-based national music and youth-culture magazine with a circulation of 600,000. On occasion, I also contribute freelance articles to other national publications.

I am currently researching a piece about the impact of "zero-tolerance" policies on high school students for the New York Times. I am writing to you and the other people on this list because of your expertise in drug policy, and in hopes that you can suggest an appropriate high-school student to profile. Have any of you encountered a high school student who has been expelled or suspended because of a zero-tolerance policy on drugs, and whose college plans have been affected as a result? I would also be very interested in hearing about kids who do not have drug problems, but who are caught with drugs or alcohol and compelled to enroll in drug treatment because of the provisions of a zero-tolerance policy.

I'm also asking that those who are willing forward this inquiry via e-mail to anyone they can think of who might be able to suggest a profile candidate. I can be reached at (718) 643-2387, via fax at (718) 222-9507, or at [email protected]. I also have voicemail at SPIN, (212) 231-7494. Many thanks in advance for whatever help you can provide. (If you receive a similar letter from my editor, it's because she is making the same request re forwarding.)

Sincerely, Mark Schone
